UA alum Todd Pletcher has become one of the world's best horse trainers. A graduate of the UA's Race Track Industry Program (RTIP), Pletcher's horses were top in the nation last year, winning $17.5 million. The UA's program was the first in the country and remains one of the few programs to offer students education for careers in horse training, animal care and management and race track marketing and management. Not all RTIP graduates become nationally known, but 90 percent of them gain employment in their field. "I am thrilled when one of our graduates makes it to the top," says Director Doug Reed. "But I am equally pleased when I meet our graduates at national conferences and know that our program set them up for success."

Soon tasty, pesticide-free, beefsteak tomatoes will be growing year-round in Douglas, Arizona. A 25-acre greenhouse has been designed with expert guidance from researchers at the UA College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Tecumseh, a Native American owned company, is building the greenhouse. This is the fourth major effort to bring commercial high-tech hydroponic food production to rural communities throughout the state. Two others are in Willcox and one in Snowflake. UA Professor Gene Giacomelli, estimates that more than $500 million has been added to the state's economy over the past 10 years, producing 1000 new jobs in hydroponic greenhouse vegetable production.
