UA surgeons were first in the world to successfully use a totally artificial heart as a bridge to transplant. Now they are the first to win approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for that same device. The study of the CardioWest total artificial heart was led by Jack Copeland, M.D.,
co director of the UA Sarver Heart Center and a world leader in cardiac transplantation. "Our team has worked on the development of the CardioWest device for two decades. We have believed all along that we could save lives for patients with heart failure and make them better candidates for cardiac transplantation." www.arizona.edu

Dance major Lindsey Quigley's life is full. Dance classes. Academics. Rehearsals. Performances. Time with friends
and family. Her life also is silent. Lindsey can't hear. Not music, not the sound of the human voice, or hands clapping a choreographed eight-count. Mark Miceli,
a graduate student in technical theatre, wants to help. His study of sound led him to develop a device that lets Lindsey feel the beat, right through her body. Art and science. New partners in a very old dance. www.arizona.edu
BUILD

The University of Arizona fosters an entrepreneurial spirit campus wide. In this environment, new discoveries become thriving enterprises. The UA contributes significantly to the state's economy and gives rise to new industries for Arizona.
A University-based business, an "orphan" drug from Germany, and years of determination may mean new treatments for cancer patients. In 1989, Evan Hersh, M.D., of the Arizona Cancer Center, founded a new company, Amplimed. Years later, he and his colleagues rediscovered a drug that showed great promise in stimulating the body's immune response. Testing it further, they realized it had applications in cancer therapy. Now the drug, called Amplimexon, has been approved for Phase I clinical trials for patients with multiple myeloma, malignant melanoma, and pancreatic cancer. UA seed funding and venture capital investment are moving the company forward. "If we're successful, the UA will gain royalties, and Tucson will gain jobs and other economic profits," Dr. Hersh said. "But most importantly, up to 200,000 patients each year may benefit." www.arizona.edu

Imagine having 20,000 dishes. That’s how many Southwestern Indian vessels are in the Arizona State Museum collection, making it the world’s largest collection of Southwest Indian pottery. The hand-crafted pots span 2000 years of life in the American Southwest and Northern Mexico, reflecting almost every cultural group in the region. This collection is considered one of
the nation’s most significant cultural resources. Established in 1893, Arizona State Museum is the oldest and largest anthropology museum in the Southwest and one of the UA's oldest research units. See the pots online at
