ALUMNI PROFILE
Celeste Marie Cardoza Snyder ’02

Persistence. Patience. Perseverance. Many people strive to attain these qualities. Celeste Marie Snyder embodies them. A 2002 graduate of the University of Arizona South, magna cum laude, Snyder has made a commitment to lifelong learning that has taken her to unprecedented heights.

Snyder began her post-secondary education as a part-time student at Cochise College, until her husband, Keith, an Army sergeant stationed at Fort Huachuca, was transferred to Vilseck, Germany in 1988. The move temporarily ended Snyder's studies. In 1991, Keith was transferred to Fort Hood, Texas. Encouraged by a coworker, Snyder enrolled in accounting classes at Central Texas College.

Snyder re-enrolled at Cochise College when she and Keith returned to Sierra Vista in 1995. Snyder was working full-time for the City of Sierra Vista when she took the bold step of enlisting in the United States Air National Guard. In 1996, Snyder enrolled at the University of Arizona South and continued her studies through the births of two daughters, one in 1998, and the other in 2000.

In 2001, Snyder's Guard unit was activated and she was ordered to live in Tucson. Snyder continued attending classes despite the twice-weekly commute to Sierra Vista. In 2002, she graduated and her Guard unit was deployed in Saudi Arabia. Snyder was selected for Military Equal Opportunity officer training, but the outlook was bleak, as she could not complete the required courses before her 35th birthday, the mandatory age cutoff point for the position. Her commander flew to Washington, D.C. to make a special appeal on her behalf. Two months later, Snyder reported to Officer Training School and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the US. Air National Guard.

Shortly thereafter, Snyder became a Department of Defense (D.O.D.) certified mediator. Ever the volunteer, she began serving as a Cochise County court mediator. Although she has not had the opportunity to use her mediation skills much working with the D.O.D., they have proven to be quite effective on her children!

Snyder says, “I'm ready to begin graduate courses at UA South toward a master’s degree in Education. Life is good!”

UA NEWS

Letter to Alumni from President Robert Shelton

Dear Alumni,

I had no idea how special it would be to arrive in Wildcat Country until my first day on the job.

On July 3, my wife, Adrian, and I were met in our driveway by a gathering of students, a contingent of the Alumni Band, and even Wilma Wildcat. They welcomed us to Tucson, cheered us on, and accompanied us on a ride to campus in a new CatTran shuttle.

There, we were greeted by several hundred students and employees of The University of Arizona, who gave us just about the warmest welcome anyone could ever hope for.

Since then, Adrian and I have been overwhelmed by the warmth and generosity extended to us by the campus community, by Tucson, and of course by the wonderful alumni of this great institution. We couldn’t be more pleased to be here.  Read more
