A
land steeped in mythology and legend, Greece has captured the hearts
and minds of artists and writers for centuries. Visit the treasures
of Delphi — an archaeological site and modern town set on the slopes
of Mount Parnassus — where you’ll see the Temple of Apollo, the
Athenian Treasury, and the Delphi Museum. Meander along the winding
streets of Pátras, where you’ll visit the blue-domed St. Andrew’s
Cathedral that’s built on the place of Saint Andrew’s martyrdom.
Next, explore the Fortress of Pátras, which was built during the
second half of the sixth century atop the ruins of the ancient
acropolis. Next, take a journey back in time to Olympia, the
birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games, first held almost 3,000
years ago. See the temples of Zeus and Hera, and visit the
Archaeological Museum. And, explore the remains of the palace at
Mycenae, best known for its impressive Lion Gate that serves as the
palace’s main entrance. You’ll also marvel at the superb acoustics
in the fourth-century theater at Epidaurus before discovering the
hidden charms of the small Greek island of Poros. Cruise to the
cosmopolitan city of Hydra and visit the city’s lovely waterfront.
Finally, discover Athens and the remains of the ancient Acropolis,
the Parthenon, and the fashionable Plaka district, located in the
oldest part of the city. The birthplace of many prominent
philosophers, politicians, and writers, Athens is often referred to
as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of
democracy.
