UA
alumni and friends have the wonderful opportunity to explore the
rich tradition, culture, and history of Mexico’s heartland in an
intimate, small-group excursion. Join tour director Manuel Rentería,
a favorite among our traveling alumni, and Dr. Charles Tatum, a UA
Spanish professor and former Fulbright scholar in Spain, for an
exclusive journey into colonial Mexico. You’ll delight in your
lodgings — restored, elegantly-appointed haciendas! With this tour,
you’re sure to discover a new side of Mexico. Stroll along old-world
avenues and plazas, and visit stately, lavishly decorated buildings
and churches. And, you’ll have several opportunities to become
immersed in Mexico’s strong Spanish history and cultural legacy. As
you trace the Route of Independence in Mexico’s heartland, you’ll
visit the best Mexican colonial cities starting with Guanajuato.
Known for its wealth of fine colonial-era Spanish architecture,
Guanajuato is located in one of the richest silver-mining areas in
Mexico. The journey moves to San Miguel de Allende — the birthplace
of Mexican independence — and the city of Morelia, which boasts some
200 historic buildings. The final leg of the tour takes travelers to
the flamboyant city of Guadalajara — one of Mexico’s principal
centers of architecture, culture, history, and economy.
