Mary
Voyatzis hosts this exclusive circumnavigation of the Peloponnese,
the southernmost section of the Balkan Peninsula. Since 2004, she
has codirected an investigation of the Sanctuary of Zeus on Mt.
Lykaion, which you will explore during the tour. Please read
“Exploring the Sanctuary of Zeus” on page 44 for complete
information about the Mt. Lykaion project. You’ll spend seven nights
aboard the intimate, 26-cabin yacht Panorama, and revel in the
breathtaking tour along the dramatic coast. Spend three nights in
Athens, where you’ll visit the Acropolis, and marvel at the soaring
columns of the Parthenon, which dates back to the fifth century B.C.
You’ll explore the temples at Sounion and Brauron, and discover the
treasures of the National Archaeological and Benaki museums. Sounion
is renowned for ruins of the ancient Greek temple of Poseidon, the
god of the sea in classical mythology. After roaming through the
winding alleyways of the Plaka District, visit the evocative theater
at Epidaurus, the ancient sites of Mycenae, and the Palace of
Nestor, which dates back to the 13th century B.C. The German-Russian
treasure hunter Heinrich Schliemann discovered an extravagant cache
of gold in Mycenae, including the regal gold Mask of Agamemnon.
You’ll also explore Mystra’s Byzantine monasteries, as well as the
birthplace of the Olympic Games in Olympia. The tour takes you to
the mystical Delphi — home of the ancient oracle — and the medieval
fortress of Monemvassia, commonly referred to as the Gibraltar of
Greece. Finally, you’ll conclude the journey with a transit tour of
the Corinth Canal upon your return to Athens.
