Every
fall, in the small grain port of Churchill, Manitoba, the tundra
surrounding the town hosts one of the earth’s most incredible
natural events. More than 1,000 polar bears congregate as they wait
for the Hudson Bay to freeze, so that they can head out onto the ice
and hunt for Artic seals. Join Dr. Yar Petryszyn, veteran UA
mammologist, and venture from Winnipeg to Churchill. Witness this
awesome sight, and learn about the ecology of this rugged landscape.
From the safety of tundra vehicles, travelers will observe these
usually solitary creatures in greater numbers than can be found
anywhere else in the world. Don’t be surprised if you see young
bears “mock fight” at close range as wary mothers cautiously shield
their cubs from the huge, solitary males. Other possible wildlife
sightings range from gyrfalcons and Arctic foxes to snowy owls and
ptarmigans, so be prepared for anything. The tour also provides a
valuable opportunity to learn about Churchill’s rich history and the
area’s culture.
