Join
us on an unforgettable, historical journey to the Yucatán Peninsula
and the land of the Mayan civilization. Before the arrival of the
Spanish in the area, the Mayan people erected breathtaking
sculptures and pyramids with murals, dating back some 3,000 years.
Today, thatch-covered houses and hand-embroidered costumes of the
villagers stand as vivid reminders that the Maya are still very much
alive in this area. This trip takes advantage of some of the most
important archaeological sites and yet-to-be-excavated Mayan cities,
which help preserve the Yucatán’s reputation for being one of the
world’s richest archaeological zones. It’s no exaggeration to say
that wherever one turns in the Yucatán, an ancient ruin is never far
away. You’ll begin your expedition in Villahermosa — considered by
many to be the cradle of the ancient Olmec people and culture. Next,
explore Palenque, a great Mayan holy city built between 100 B.C. and
800 A.D.
Travel
to the picturesque countryside where you’ll explore the ancient
Mayan temples of Uxmal and the soaring pyramids of Chichén Itzá.
Finally, experience the charming colonial city of Mérida — the
Yucatan’s capital city — which was founded in 1542 and built upon
the ruins of the Mayan city of T’ho. Our top-rated tour director,
Manuel Rentería, hosts the tour. With his extensive knowledge,
friendly style, and delightfully wry sense of humor, Rentería has
earned a great following among our alumni travelers. He’s shown
travelers the area for more than 26 years, and offers you a rare
glimpse behind the scenes and into the heart of the Yucatán’s rich
culture and traditions. So, whether you’re looking for a tropical
adventure, a glimpse into the ancient Mayan culture, or a getaway
with friends, our Yucatán Peninsula adventure provides travelers
with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to become immersed in the
region’s culture and people.
