Minutes from Annual Meeting of UA Alumni Band

Sat. November 11, 2000, UAAB Homecoming Breakfast Meeting at Pueblo Room, Student Union, 7:30 a.m. Meeting began with the Pride of Arizona performing Bear Down and Fight Wildcats for the alumni.

UAAB President John Prokop opened the meeting with presentation of awards. John presented the Fight Wildcats Fight award to UA Athletic Director Jim Livengood for his strong intrerest and support provided to the UA Band Program. Jay Rees, UA Marching Band Director was introduced, endorsed the award and told the audience of his personal view of the importance of Livengood to the Band.

The Bear Down Award was then presented to Dave Cole for all his dedication to the Alumni Band and his active participation in the Alumni Pep Band, regularly coming down to Tucson from Phoenix for our events.

Next, the Judy Lee Award was presented by Shirlee Bertolini to Denise Baldwin, alumni twirler, for her dedicated service to the twirling squad.

Elections were held for the 2000-2001 Board of Directors.

• Secretary : Sue Essig moved that the nominations for secretary be closed and that Shirley Bayne be elected by acclamation. Alli Howard seconded, and the membership voted all ayes.
• Treasurer: Next, a ballot vote was held for treasurer. Steve Coyle and Dave Olson were the candidates. Dave Olson was reelected Treasurer.
• Members at Large : The vote for three members at large was next. Mike Coyle, Ward Stevens, Steve Smith, and Steve Coyle were the candidates. Election results included Mike Coyle, Ward Stevens, and Steve Coyle as the members at large.

John outlined plans for the day. Member Hank Plimack suggested that the board check on the procedure to obtain matching funds from employers and that we are missing such opportunities. The board members agreed to discuss at a future meeting. John announced that a committee will be formed in the near future to begin planning the 100th anniversary of the UA Band, and the 50th anniversary of the writing of Bear Down Arizona by Jack Lee, which will occur in 2002. John also talked about discussions he has had with regard to having the UA Band well represented in the new Jim Click Hall of Champions which will open in the Fall, 2001.

It was announced that the Alumni Band will develop plans to travel to San Diego State University for the football game next year, on September 1.

Door prizes were awarded throughout the meeting, mostly consisting of UAAB items. Lee Oler won the drawing for the baritone ukeleli donated by Instrumental Music on Speedway. An announcement was made about the Nov. 24 UA and ASU band exhibition at CDO HS at 10 a.m. Also, the Alumni pep band will play at the UA/ASU game on that same day.
