UAAB Board Meeting MinutesDecember 2, 2000
The meeting started at 9:10 a.m.
The minutes from the Homecoming meeting were approved.
Dave O. gave the Treasurer’s report. We have $2618.92 in savings and $2083.95 in checking. All outstanding bills are paid. We have $115 coming from Andy’s company for the leftover soda. We probably broke even on homecoming. 88 people came to the breakfast meeting at homecoming. However, many people did not register in advance for the breakfast. Fortunately Dave told the restaurant to plan on 75, even though he only had 45 registrants. Considering how the restaurant only prepares 5% over, it is important that we work on getting an accurate count for breakfast in the future.
Bryan moved to accept the Treasurer’s report.
Homecoming Critique - - -
We received $35 from the crowd when the Alumni Pep Band did a pre-game gig at the ASU game. John P. wrote a letter to Instrumental Music to thank them for donating a ukulele and for doing a good job of restoring our alumni band bass drum.
We may use a different site for the homecoming breakfast next year. We may pick an auditorium or room on campus and provide our own breakfast for the group at little or no cost.
Elizabeth said we need to get a list of needed instruments to Deon earlier than 2 days before homecoming so she can prepare easily. All instruments were returned. Several complaints were made about the instrument fee. Only one sousaphone was requested. Some thought that the fee caused some people not to attend. Dave O. moved to drop the fee for borrowing instruments. Dave B. seconded. The motion was amended to a $5 refundable fee. Motion passed.
Elizabeth would like a spot for people to request which music parts (1st, 2nd, 3rd) they want on the registration form.
There was a picture taken after the homecoming rehearsal. Approximately 25 people went to lunch at Gentle Ben’s.
The tent was in a good location.
We had 80 people marching in the parade, of which 57 were poms/twirlers. We were lined up too far back; otherwise it went well.
The meal on the mall had a smaller turnout than usual. Some of the UA band didn’t come, probably since the day was so long, and they were dismissed until later. As a result, 100 extra eegee’s sandwiches were donated to the Primavera shelter. They were very appreciative, as they were short on food that day.
The pregame playing with 2 groups went well. There was an Alumni Band and the usual Alumni Pep Band. We had a good block of seats in the stands and got onto the field easily for the halftime show.
Alumni Pep Band - - -
Dave Ball and Alli Howard are listed as leaders for this band on the web page.
There is a new gig for the U of A Child Language Center, which was announced for February 3rd. However, the date has been changed to Saturday March 3rd. We will start at 10:00 a.m. and play for about ½ hour. The event is actually the dedication ceremonies for the Wings on Words Preschool and Kindergarten, part of the Child Language Center, and is located at 202 E. Speedway at 6th Avenue.
There is a Women’s BB game on Dec. 17. We are limited to 50 seats at the Men’s BB games.
Shirley mentioned that there was no pep band at the UA volleyball game on Band Day. The alumni pep band could have covered it.
Pins and Card to UA Band Seniors - - -
John gave out 36 pins and cards to UA Band Seniors during the last meeting of marching band. He also spoke to the group. Seniors received a pin, alumni band membership card, a welcome note and an information card. We need to do a better job of getting these information cards to people who are leaving the band, yet are not seniors. We need a roster of band members. Also, we will keep cards on the bulletin board.
Membership List - - -
Dave Olson will get a list of names/addresses, etc. to Elizabeth for the January newsletter. John will send a press release to other UA alumni clubs for them to include in their newsletters and web sites saying that we are looking for former band members.
Gaslight Theatre - - -
Dave O. said we have 50 tickets, but are only obligated to sell 20. 15 are sold. The event is Jan. 26.
Newsletter - - -
Dave O. said the newsletter would go out in early January for the 1st quarter, which is Jan. through March. Ads will need a contract stating the size, how long the ad will run, and what it will look like. Dave B. will contact Instrumental Music about putting in an ad. We need to be careful about choosing the types of ads that we will mail as nonprofit organizations through the Alumni Association versus those that we send to our active list using regular postage. We should encourage ads. John will contact Lance Hoopes.
Article assignments - - -
DEADLINE FOR THE NEWSLETTER IS FRI. DEC. 22
Dave O. will compile the newsletter.
John will do a critique of homecoming and the President’s letter.
John will also do a history moment on the 1st Super Bowl. Andy B. suggested we lead up to the 2002 celebration by writing history moments through the decades. Another idea is to do a history moment about Frank Simon. Bryan said that this is the 20th anniversary of the Band Yells and the 4-corner entry to the marching field.
John will get a list of UA activities from Shannon Casey.
Dave O. will write an article about the Gaslight.
Dave B. will write about the Pep Band Gig that has been changed to March 3.
Alli will write about the San Diego trip scheduled for Labor Day.
Web Site - - -
Gary Sawyer will put the minutes online. We may add a guest book to the web site.
There were some concerns about the technical aspects of the newsletter. Dave O. will coordinate with Gary to e-mail people with a link to the web site or the newsletter.
Elizabeth will talk with the TBS alumni chair regarding the TBS Alumni Newsletter.
Jim Click Hall of Fame Update - - -
The Alumni Band will assist in the effort to represent the band. John P. plans to meet with Gregg Hanson, Jack Lee, and Jay Rees after the holidays to discuss the 50th anniversary of Bear Down. They plan to set up a formal committee by next year. We are planning a special exhibit in the Fall of 2002 which may be later moved to the School of Music. We may build some display cases in the SOM.
San Diego State Trip - - -
Alli is coordinating a trip to SDSU for Labor Day Weekend, Sept. 1 of next year. The board will discuss details at future meetings.
NEXT MEETING - - -
