UAAB Board Meeting MinutesFebruary 4th, 2001
The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m. with all members present, except for Shannon Casey.
Minutes from the last meeting were accepted.
Treasurer’s Report
Dave O. reported that we have $2633.26 in Savings; $1823.28 in Checking; and $112.00 in Cash, for a total of $4568.54. Also, we just received a $25 membership from Gary Low, ’55. Report was accepted.
Alumni Pep Band
There are 8 people going on the bus trip tour of AZ on Thursday. Also, on Friday, Feb. 9 there will be a Meet and Greet for new coach Mackovich at the Marriott. All are welcome to come and play. More info is on our website at:
UAAlumniBand.freeservers.com
Next, on Sat. March 3 we will meet at 202 E. Speedway (at 6th Ave.) for a gig. Call is 9:45 a.m. We will play from 10-10:30 a.m.
Newsletter
Our next issue is in April. We would like to get more ads. Please think of an article you could write for this issue and let Dave Olson know. Alli will do a report of the bus trip. Other suggestions are: drum up interest in the stadium band for next year; POA’s show for next year- Crosby, Stills, Nash (put in July issue); John will do a history moment; Dave O. suggested personal histories/memories of band times. If you have any, send them to Dave for publication in the newsletter. Steve will do an update on the Sept. 1 trip to San Diego State to play at the football game.
Mailing List/UAAB Outreach to Find Lost Members
Elizabeth has a new PC. Privacy laws only apply to students, so we can collect concert programs with names and then contact these people through the Alumni Assn. after they have left school. However, we can only get this info from people who actually graduated from the school. Also, John talked to Jay Rochlin who is the editor in chief for the AZ Alumni magazine. He suggested that we put an ad in the classified section of the magazine, (Cat-ifies) which is currently free. John presented an ad he had written, and a few changes were suggested. Also, John will send a copy of this ad to UA alumni clubs in CA. Also, we can register new people on our web site.
Web Site
We have a new address (that was incorrect in the last newsletter) and the site looks good. Our alumni band board pictures are on the site. Gary Sawyer is maintaining the site at UAAlumniBand.freeservers.com
Gaslight Theatre
We sold 18 tickets and made $10.60. People enjoyed it and would like to do it again. Dave Olson will set us up for each series for the late Friday evening show.
Interest was expressed in having a bowling night, preferably a smoke-free night. Shirley Bayne will check into this.
Jim Click Hall of Champions
Not much progress is happening on this yet, as John has been unable to meet with Gregg Hanson which would include a look at the band archives.
Nominations to UA Sports Hall of Fame John presented his write-up for our nomination and it was approved to submit to the University.
Jack Lee’s Surprise B-Day Party
We are all invited. RSVP if interested.
San Diego Trip Planning
The game is scheduled for Sept. 1. Game time is unknown, so we don’t know whether to leave Friday evening or Saturday morning. Milt Dardis, a tuba alumnus, has pledged $100 towards the trip, and will recruit people to attend from the LA area. Steve Coyle will check on bus and hotel rooms. Also will attempt to get permission for us to attend as “the band” so we can get free game tickets. He will talk to Jay Rees to get permission. We will also need to have Jay contact SD State to let them know we will be there, and get their okay to play in the stands.
NEW BUSINESS
Rodeo Parade
The Parade is Thursday, Feb. 22. Dave Olson will meet the POA at the end of the parade at 6th and Irvington. He will buy water to hand out to the band members. Anyone is invited to help. Shirley Bayne volunteered.
New Operating Procedures with Alumni Assn.
John reported on a recent meeting he and Gary had with Pat Bjorhovde of the College of Fine Arts and John Welty of the Alumni Foundation concerning new procedures for handling our organization’s funds. A subsequent discussion with Nancy Yaeli of the Alumni Foundation indicated we can probably keep our own funds but will be subject to new year-end reporting requirements. Nancy sent John a copy of the new requirements and they seem to be workable for us. John and Dave Olson will plan to visit with Alumni Association staff in the near future to get clarification of procedures.
Wind Ens. Trip to Europe
Alumni Band members will be contacted for donations for the Wind Ens. Trip to Switzerland.
Fundraising Committee
In response to the band’s need for funds, Alli suggested forming a fundraising committee to donate to the Pride Band. If we put funds into the AZ Band Boosters Acct. it will go into the Endowment where the band will only receive interest. However, checks written to the UAB can be used immediately. Gary said the Boosters have a Restricted Acct. which could be used to raise money for the UA Band. John and Dave O. will talk with the Alumni Assn. to see how we can raise money for the UA Band.
Attendance Idea
Lee Oler wrote a letter with a suggestion from Sonny Solot, ’51. He suggests that we have people at the Homecoming Breakfast stand up by years (decades?) and be recognized. Then, give out prizes for the biggest turnout. We will consider this when we start planning for Homecoming 2001.
New Shirt Styles
Mike suggested we get a new alumni band shirt made from a different material and in a different style. Also, maybe use a new logo. Dave B. suggested getting a nicer shirt for the same price without making a profit on it. Dave Olson will head a committee to study the ideas. All were interested in being informed of the ideas.
A group picture was taken. Homecoming pictures were passed around.
Meeting adjourned at 8:50 p.m.
NEXT MEETING: SUNDAY, APRIL 22 at 4 p.m. at John Prokop’s house.
