alumni02 UAAB BOARD MEETING

APRIL 22, 2001

MINUTES

The meeting was called to order at 4:20 p.m. Members present: Elizabeth, Alli, Mike, Bryan, Shirley, John, and Dave O. Members absent: Dave B, Steve, Ward, Andrew, Gary and Shannon. The minutes from the last meeting were approved.

The Treasurer’s report remains unchanged from the last meeting.

PEP BAND
The band is small but good. We could always use more members. Some gigs attracted very few musicians. Bob Kruse is especially appreciated for playing (and carrying) his drums to almost every event. A picture from the Papa John’s gig was passed around, as was a group picture from the last board meeting. The band will continue to get gigs and strive to get compensation as well. We have 4 new pieces that are not from the Pride Band. Three of these were purchased for the Race for the Cure gig and the Championship Game gig to provide us with more music for these longer gigs. The board voted to reimburse Alli the $150 she spent for these charts. We are looking to get more music. Some UA Band students joined us for the Championship Game gig. The Race for the Cure gig was a very worthwhile event. We received a thank you letter from the director of the March 3 preschool gig. Our next gig is June 21 (Thursday) from 1:45 to about 2:45 at La Paloma. We will play Happy Birthday (key of F) and Bear Down. Compensation is $200.

NEWSLETTER
Dave Olson passed around drafts of the newsletter. It will be out soon. John had given Dave an article on Jack Lee’s birthday party in this newsletter that Dave had missed. A number of other corrections were given to Dave. (Pictures of)

BOWLING
We set a date for Bowling with the Band: Saturday, July 21 from 2-4 p.m. at Lucky Strike Bowl. Cost is $6 for two hours of bowling, including shoe rental. Shirley is the contact person and will do a newsletter article for the summer newsletter.

MAILING LIST
Elizabeth will send 6 changes to Dave for the newsletter.

ALUMNI ASSN. DEVELOPMENTS
John has learned there is an Alumni Club President’s conference in September. Also, the Alumni Assn. does printing for other Alumni Clubs and maintains their member list. They are willing to do that for us, too. They can code the people who are active and also maintain a master list. It was suggested that they do our newsletter, but they would probably do smaller mailings like postcards. We will have them work on our mailing list. John will contact them. Also, we can use their facilities for meetings and probably get a budget for mailings.

YEAR-END FINANCIAL REPORT
John gave Dave the Alumni Assn. year-end financial report form, which is due Sept. 1, 2001.

CALL FROM BILL CHINWORTH
John received a call from Bill Chinworth, a band alum from the ‘60s. He indicated he was with Jack Lee at a meeting with Jay Rochlin, Editor of the AZ Alumnus Magazine. Jack had some ideas for the UA Band 100 year anniversary and the Bear Down 50 year anniversary, which will take place in the Fall of 2002. He suggested that Rochlin provide free publicity for the event. Rochlin agreed and will provide a 1” announcement in the Advertising section in the summer issue. Chinworth also suggested we continue the ad over the next year. John will contact Rochlin and see that we have an ad as promised.

UA SPORTS HALL OF FAME
This committee will meet this April. They have 43 nominations for 6 spots. Nominations remain on the list for 2 years.

NEW SHIRTS
We are looking into getting new shirts and changing the logo to the bass drum logo. Clarissa is the approved vendor. We can go look through her catalogs for ideas of the type of shirts we’d want. Also considering a “100 years of band” shirt. Dave O. is trying to find/make tuba socks (that cover the bells). He is thinking about silk screening red cloth with the logo and then sewing them together. Mike had concerns about the type of cloth, specifically cotton that would dampen the sound. Perhaps nylon could be used instead.

WEB SITE
Alli volunteered to maintain the pep band gig calendar on the web site.

NEXT MEETING
The next meeting is scheduled for Saturday, July 7 at 10 a.m. at John’s house.
