UAAB University of Arizona
Alumni Band Board Meeting

March 2, 2002

The meeting was called to order at 10:15 a.m. Members present were: Shirley Bayne, John Prokop, Alli Howard, Dave Olson, Dave Ball, Andrew Barcellos, and Elizabeth-Anne Rowe.

Membership Changes:
Alli Howard will soon become the new UA band liaison. At that time she will resign her member-at-large position and a person will be appointed for that position. Dave Olson said that he would not run for re-election as Treasurer after his term expires in November 2002.

Homecoming Suggestions:
We would like a double tent for this year. We will also rent a U-haul trailer and park it at the tent for instrument storage. We will suggest that the UA reverse the parade route (from Campbell to Park). Elizabeth-Anne will need more help with the music for this year’s homecoming. We will need more instruments to loan out, also. We will also need more water and more tickets for the game.

We are thinking of having a banquet and business meeting Friday night before the homecoming game instead of our usual Sat. morning breakfast meeting. Suggested places were the Marriott Hotel, McKale Center, or the Centennial Hall stage. We would like to invite previous band directors, give awards, and have a humorous speaker.

The following members will meet with Jay Rees regarding involving the alumni band in the homecoming marching show: Andrew, Alli, Elizabeth, Steve, Dave Ball, and Bryan Holbrook. Alli will set up a time to meet with Jay. A suggestion was made to have the Alumni Band rehearse the drill on Homecoming Saturday at 8 a.m. and have the PRIDE band join us at 9 a.m.

Treasurer’s Report:
We have $1039.47 in our checking account. We have $2654.84 in our savings account. We have $700 in new shirts. Those will be listed for sale in the newsletter so people can have them for Alumni Band gigs. We have approximately 60 contributing members this year (about 15 less than last year).

Newsletter:
The newsletter with basic details about Homecoming 2002 will be sent out soon to our full list of members. It will request that everyone send us his or her e-mail address so we can keep in touch more easily. Andrew B. will put it together. It will also include a short message from UAAB President and a list of Pep Band gigs.

Pep Band Gigs:
Mark your calendar for Sunday, April 14 for the Race for the Cure event at Reid Park. Call time is planned for 7:30 a.m. until about 10 a.m. Also, we have a gig on Saturday, April 27 from 7:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. playing for the Volunteer Recognition event at the Reid Park zoo. They will give us breakfast.

Elizabeth-Anne made a motion to spend up to $300 on folios. Alli seconded. Motion passed.

We would like to organize UA alumni in the Phoenix area to play in a pep band. We could do a joint event up there some Saturday for a game. We will get a list of Phoenix people and their e-mail addresses from the Alumni Assn.

We have a gig in Phoenix in August to send off students to the UA from the Phoenix area. We also have a state employee recognition day in Phoenix this Fall. Dates will be announced when we are notified.

We will try to get more publicity by getting information to the Alumnus magazine.

We are still interested in putting together a historical display in the Student Union.

There is an Alumni Assn. General Meeting on March 7. We would like to suggest that the 100th anniversary of the band and the 50th anniversary of “Bear Down” be the theme for Homecoming 2002.

Meeting was adjourned at 11:15 a.m.

The next meeting will be called after Alli and others get a chance to meet with Jay Rees.
