UAAB MinutesThe meeting was called to order at 2:10 p.m. at Andrew’s office. Present: Andrew Barcellos, Alli and Mike Coyle, Steve Coyle, Gary Sawyer, Elizabeth Anne Rowe, Dave Olson, Shirley Bayne and Bryan Pierson came later.
The minutes from the last meeting were accepted, with amendments as e-mailed. We received an e-mail from John Prokop with questions from Bill Bolerjack. Answers are to park wherever is available for homecoming and to simply show up to the Bear Down Bash; there will be a list of people who have paid.
The treasurer reported no change from the last meeting; $816.21 in checking, $2657.10 in savings. We have an outstanding bill owed to Dave Olson for approximately $400. A check was given to Eve for our portion of the second homecoming tent. Andrew Barcellos needs to become the second signer on our account. He and Dave will go together to the bank next week to get that done.
Awards Committee: E-mails will be circulated regarding choices, with decisions made by Oct. 26. Bryan will get the awards made.
Election Committee: Michelle Stribling has accepted the Member at Large position that was vacated when Alli became Liaison. Her phone number is 661-1800 and her e-mail is mstribling@arizona.edu
Homecoming: We have approximately 40-45 marchers for either the parade or half-time show or both, according to Alli. We are expecting about 100 for the Bash/Reception. Andrew will meet with Jay regarding when to present the awards. We will have a pick-up/drop-off point for the instruments. The rental truck will be parked at Room J after the morning rehearsal. We’ll provide lunch for appx. 375 (275 band, 100 alumni). The time and location for the business meeting is undecided. Andrew will check for a room. The uniform for the day is a red polo shirt with the new red logo (instead of the t-shirt). We will sell it at cost. Gary re-extended his offer of having the Band Boosters give us $500 to help offset the shirt cost. Alli will check on this. The half-time music will be the full version of “Bear Down, Arizona”. We will distribute folios with 2 windows. Cardboard will be available, if desired. We are still working on football tickets. Andrew will check on this. The after-game party will probably be at the Park Student Union. We’ve had a request for a breakfast on Sunday. It will be informally announced, but not sponsored by the UAAB.
Pep Band Gigs: A motion was made and passed, effective December 2002, to charge $5 or get a drivers’ license as collateral for the pep band folders. The $5 or license would be returned when the folder was returned at the end of the game/gig. Alternatively, members could pay a $10 yearly fee and keep the folio (this would cover the cost of it). We will do outside gigs for “pay”/donations. The standard rate is $100 for a 10-person band. Elizabeth Anne suggested we perform for the Arts Run at her school, Liberty Elementary. It would be sometime in late February/early March on a Wednesday morning. This would be dependent on members’ availability.
New Business: Andrew attended the Alumni Club Presidents Conference, a 2-day event with 30 UA Alumni Club presidents from all over the country. He made lots of contacts, many of which want music for their web pages. These contacts also want to do gigs in their own cities and make money for scholarships. The UAAB is considered a constituent member, not an alumni club. We considered doing a fundraising mailer/phone bank as a way to get out the word about homecoming and register people and get their information. The callers/organizers get .35 of every dollar donated.
We have a new e-mail: band@al.arizona.edu
Victory Lane Tile: A motion was made and passed to spend $600 from our account to get a good spot on the Victory Lane at the Eddie Lynch Pavilion. We will ask for donations at homecoming to replenish our account.
KKY/TBS BBQ: We were asked to help out with a fundraiser, by grilling food for the band. We decided this would not be an official UAAB event, but that individuals may help out. (Secretary’s note: this event was later cancelled.)
Newsletter: This issue should be out by Oct. 18 or sooner. It will also be sent out by e-mail.
Next Meeting: Homecoming. After that, the next meeting will be December 15 at 2 p.m. at Andrew’s office.
Meeting adjourned at 4:25 p.m.
